How to play EIUP flash games

Many games and applications that I have made for helping to teach students were made in Flash as it is a versatile and ideal software for making simple interactive games that will not require installing for each applications. Although there is no "support" for Flash, the old software still works fine and it fairly easy to set up.

*For more information about additional security and safety while using these games, please read the Security & Settings section here

Methods for running flash games:
Internet browser (Firefox)
Windows exe file
Ruffle Flash Emulator

1: Install Firefox browser and Flash plugin
First you will need a browser that can use the Flash plug-in (the flash plug-in is the software that can read the game data and run the game itself but the plug-in needs a browser so it has some space to work in so to speak. A version of firefox that will work with the flash plug-in can be downloaded here: https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/28.0/win32/en-US/ (Official Mozilla website FTP repository)

Install the software as normal following the instructions.

2: Install the flash plugin
Run the (Windows) file "flashplayer32_0r0_371_win.msi" and install the software as normal following the instructions. While it is no longer available officially, this file may be found via different internet based sources.

There is one fairly trustworthy source here though please use with caution as security cannot be 100% guaranteed: https://archive.org/download/flashplayer32_0r0_371_win/flashplayer32_0r0_371_win.msi*

*This is not the original software company site but is still the most established and trustworthy source currently on the internet.

3. Setting up and starting a game

Open the firefox browser (there should be a shortcut on your desktop) and a browser window will open.

Find the game file you want to play and drag and drop a .swf file (game) into the browser. Also, you can go to FILE>OPEN> and open the game file you want directly.

If all has worked correctly you should see this image. The plug-in is usually set not to start automatically as default to maintain security (see more information about security below). Clicking anywhere on the black area will bring up a prompt window asking if you'd like to allow the game to run this time.

Click "allow now" and the game should open and ready to play. (Instructions for individual games should be provided in the future. In the meantime, if you have any questions about any of the games, please get in touch and we will try our best to help.)

4. Security and settings
While flash (and the old version firefox) are no longer supported or updated, the software is generally safe to use, especially when internet access is blocked (the games DO NOT require or use internet access). The following steps can be followed to add additional layers of protection.

*Download links on this page are to official sources not hosted or endorsed by EIUP. These are the recommended and tested software I have used, however, please ensure you take as much care as possible when downloading and installing *any* kind of software.
*The games were made by myself and contain no malware or viruses. I have enough basic knowledge to make these games but do not have the knowledge or wish to write any virus software.

1. Plug-in settings
I would recommend keeping the default setting and letting the browser warn you whenever you start a flash game. In this way the game cannot be run automatically without your knowledge.

2. Work offline
"Work Offline" in Firefox will stop access to the internet even if the computer connected to the internet. The games will run offline as normal. The internet/wi-fi to your other software or computer itself will not be affected.

3. Hash check
For those with a little more computing knowledge or want to be a little more cautious, I will provide the hashes for the game files below.

Hashes are a code that represents the contents of a computer file as a alphanumeric code. If the file is altered in any way, the hash will be different, even if the size, name, creation date, etc. are exactly the same.

Hashes can be checked (verified) with software such as TeraCopy (site) or on trustworthy cyber security sites. Please research the most convenient and suitable method for your needs.
